BankID Norway

Norway

BankID is Norway's national electronic identity, created and issued by the country's banks and used across banking, government, and other online services. It has been in use since 2004 and is held by a large majority of the adult population, which makes it the primary way Norwegians log in and sign digitally. The domestic scheme is governed by Bits, the standards body for the Norwegian financial industry, and it is notified under the EU eIDAS framework at a high assurance level.

What is BankID Norway?

BankID is Norway's national electronic identity, created and issued by the country's banks and used across banking, government, and other online services. It has been in use since 2004 and is held by a large majority of the adult population, which makes it the primary way Norwegians log in and sign digitally. The domestic scheme is governed by Bits, the standards body for the Norwegian financial industry, and it is notified under the EU eIDAS framework at a high assurance level.

Verification is based on the person's national identity number (fødselsnummer) together with a personal PIN and a one-time code from the BankID app or a code device. When someone authenticates, the scheme confirms the identity linked to that number and can return verified details such as the person's name and date of birth. The customer proves who they are directly with their existing BankID credentials, so there is no document upload or selfie step.

How verification works
